Day 20

Day 20

Eternal Spirit– Preexistent divine personality of God

WRITTEN BY: Bre Forgione

Scripture: Hebrews 9:14 -NLT“Just think how much more the blood of Christ will purify our consciences from sinful deeds so that we can worship the living God. For by the power of the eternal Spirit, Christ offered himself to God as a perfect sacrifice for our sins.”

Observation:  In the Old Testament, attempts to be reconciled to God through deeds and rituals are described as “dead works.” Works that may have formerly sought to earn the favor of God become good works through the blood of Christ as a result of our response to God’s favor. Just as Old Testament sacrifices had to be without blemish, Jesus is holy, innocent, and unstained, holding the ability to purify our conscience through the power of the Holy Spirit.

Application: Nothing can be compared to the fruitfulness of Christ’s atoning blood, not even “the blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a heifer.”

In the book of Numbers, we learn about the significance of the ashes of a red heifer and why they were highly prized. These ashes were used to remove a person’s defilement if they came in contact with a dead body. The blood of the animal would be sprinkled seven times in front of the tabernacle and afterward burned to ashes, which were carefully stored for future cleansing.

Jesus was both the high priest and the sacrifice itself. Through the aid of the Holy Spirit, Christ was empowered to make this offering. We are not cleansed for only a season or outwardly, but by the shed blood of the perfect Lamb of God, we are washed clean and covered by his grace forever. Unlike Mosaic sacrifices that did not affect the conscience, Christ’s sacrifice transforms our innermost being.

True salvation brings us into God’s service, equipped to bring heaven to earth through the power of the Holy Spirit. Jesus has freed us from slavery to sin, inviting us into the newness of life and purity in spirit.

What a blessing it is to know that the Eternal Spirit of God is living and breathing inside of us. God is constantly inviting us into awareness of his divine personality, reminding us that we are called to set our sights on eternity and align our values with a kingdom-driven mindset.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, what an incredible sacrifice that through the blood of Christ, my salvation has been made secure. Eternal Spirit, you are my Comforter and my Friend. As I stand on your Word and dive deeper into understanding who you are, I ask that your Eternal Spirit would rain down on me. Let your power fall on me and purify my heart. Open heaven wide and pour out the rain of your Holy Spirit over my church, my community, and my region. Change me, renew me, and empower me. Help me to recognize that I have been given sufficient grace to love and serve you always. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

I love the comparison of the sacrifice in how Old Testament sacrifices were temporary and didn’t actually change our conscious. We are so blessed that we have the Spirit actually with us to help transform us to be more like Christ! Thanks for the great reminder!
