10 Jul Get Settled: Find Your Footing When the World Is Shaky Ground
Have you ever felt unsettled? Maybe things at home are unstable. Your job may be about to be terminated. Or anxiety threatens to steal your breath every chance it gets. What if there was a way you could feel settled even in the midst of very unsettling times?
What if there was a way you could stand firm on shaky ground? And what if there was a way to hold to truth when confusion seems to pervade the atmosphere? Would you want to know how? Yes? Good! Let’s explore this together then!
Take a moment—pause—and ask yourself; “What external circumstance or internal belief is causing me to feel unsettled?” Search deep within yourself and be truthful. Challenging, I know. Have your answer, or answers? Now ask yourself, “Why is it unsettling me? And what do I need to do to be settled?”
As followers of Jesus, first we are to trust in the Lord. His ways are higher than our ways (Isaiah 55:8-9) and he has good plans for his children (Jeremiah 29:11) even through unsettling times. Trusting isn’t always easy, but when we look at the cross, there we see the love of God revealed through the outstretched arms of his Son, Jesus who died to settle our debt (Colossians 2:13-14).
In Proverbs 3:5-6 (NLT)- (a book full of wisdom!) we read,
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.”
Second, we read, “Do not depend on your own understanding.” I don’t know about you, but I have lived long enough to know this truth! How many times have you thought you 100% knew something only to find out later you were 100% wrong?
Our understanding is so limited. Limited by our experiences, what we are exposed to and what we perceive as true. But God’s understanding is unlimited! He is not constrained to time, space or experience as we are. He has been from the beginning and will be forever. His understanding is by far greater than we can ever even imagine! Making time each day for a slot and spot (a time and place) to study scripture is a great way to recognize this and get to know God deeper.

Last but certainly not least, is we seek God’s will and let him reveal the path to take. I’ve stood there, at the crossroads with numerous paths stretched out before me—I’m sure you have been there too—pondering this question; which one is the right one and how do I know which one it is? The answer is always the same; seek God and his will. Not sure how to do that? Great! You have come to the right place!
